Is the line between fanservice and adult material becoming blurred?

CyberCubed New York
So a friend recommended me to watch an anime named “Kanokon,” and previously I never heard of that show before.
The level of fanservice in the show is so ridiculous that I don’t know why its even considered a normal series. Look up the show if you’re unfamiliar with it yourself to see what I mean.
Is it just me, or is the line between anime and adult stuff becoming increasingly blurred in recent years? I can stomach some of it, but some shows just go too far. I don’t know about some of you, but I don’t sit down to watch shows with underage girls either nude or wearing practically nothing. If a show has one or two scenes like that, I can tolerate it, but some shows just do it way too much. Its almost as if they think they won’t get ratings or the manga won’t sell unless it has a number of scenes like this.
Also the increased lesbianism in shows also makes me wonder. Now I have no problem with proper couples like this where its taken seriously, but other shows do it just for fanservice or for comedy reasons. I’m not going to go too in detail about this, but I’m sure all you guys know what I mean.
What are your thoughts on this?

I am just going to say two words Rosario Vampire

What kind of friend recommends Kanokon in the first place?
And in this case, it’s not going “too far” because all the sexual scenes and themes is exactly what Kanokon is in the first place. If it was increased from the source material, then yes.

I can tolerate it to a point as well.
If an anime is directed as being a “fan-service” kind of show, then i’ll just stay away from it.
but it is annoying when some of my favorite mangas will randomly just add fanservice.

If you’ve ever seen hentai anime, you wouldn’t be asking that question.

Sex Sells.

peterg14
Yeah, Rosario + Vampire is nothing but ecchi really. The difference between stuff like Rosario and adult material is that adult material shows full blown sex, while shows lke Rosario and Kanokon only show panty shots or boob jokes more often than something like Dragonball or Naruto.

DemonLordShugo
the Rosario+Vampire manga is totally different from the anime, and it’s the same with the Strike Witches light novels

FlyByNite7
Actually Kanokon goes well beyond the panty-shot and shows nudity, it just didn’t show it in the broadcast version. The DVD version has nudity in it, which is becoming more and more common with some fan-service series.
If you look at DVD sales some of the best selling DVD releases last year were hentai. It’s one of the reasons why Gonzo has been rumored to possibly be getting into the hentai market a little bit to help its financial situation.

Oddly enough, the recent Oh my Goddess Fighting Wings OVA, IIRC, censored the original manga scene of Belldandy naked at the bath by putting a towel on her. Even though it went directly to DVD as far as I know…..

DemonLordShugo
Well then again, it all depends on the director, but DVD’s mostly have no restrictions

Last I checked, Japanese otaku preferred anime women over real women, so I’d say shows like Kanokon are just appealing to the audience they were made for. Sex sells,

Funkgun
Eh, it seems they push the envelope in their own country as much as we do here.
I suppose it makes me really appreciate a show like Moribito, which has little fan-service at all, or Macross Frontier which has some, but very limited. In fact being that it is limitied it feels more like a real fanservice momnet.

Frontier is a heavy user of “Fanservice

Well, I don’t get distracted seeing the fanservice in Kodomo no Jikan (I like seeing it because of the plot), I only get destracted about the fact that the humor could have done so much better.

I never understood why lolicon was so accepted in Japan anyway. I mean I can understand high-school stuff, but when they go younger than that, its just creepy.

DemonLordShugo
Dunno, But personally I’m okay with loli’s, I tend to ignore the fact that they look like kids, and enjoy the shows, I think of them as SD characters (i.e chibis)

peterg14
I guess because its animated, and it isn’t really hurting any real children, so I guess its no cause for concern there.

And yet the article I posted mostly explains the why of this trend.
More specifically Japanese culture isn’t primarilly based around the Sex = Evil meme of Western christian society. Certain, Greek, and other City states from before / around the Greek/Roman empires, were notorious for ‘Love’ with children. Even the bible has numerous instances of Child Rape (commanded by god and his prophets), and the selling of girl children into slavery. The Mosaic law even outlines the proper way to sell your daughter into slavery, and also has provisions so that girls who are raped are forced to marry their rapists.
So don’t get any idea that this phenomenon is particulary specific to Japan.

I can’t get into shows that rely on the fanservice gimmick, nor do I really feel like supporting them.

The manga author of Ghost in the Shell admits that lesbian scenes are easier because he doesn’t want to draw male butts all the time, so that might be why.

This. I got in an argument with someone the other day about this and they didn’t believe me, so I directed them towards the manga. Needless to say, their image of Motoko was slightly blurred after this, and I just laughed and laughed.

Shirow was just an honest guy, he knew what he liked to draw ^^

he’s a good friend

Well… he might be…. ^^
But if I am recommended to watch Kanokon….
I wanna ask that friend who I am for him/her….
I really wanna know why his friend recommended Kanokon…..

This kind of theme is talked alot at foreign anime forum, but they seem never to get tired of this. We cannot have the result, or there are many new comers, so this topic would be talked forever…..
Well, as some foreigners said, « Sex Sells » might be one of the conclusions. Well, but if the reason is only money, it would be a little sad… ^^

Some people mentioned that the original manga changed completely because of fanservice in anime. Foreign otaku know many things…
Especially, Rosario and Vampire.
I didn’t know that. I thought there is that kind of manga… ^^

(highly evaluated in review!)
Some anime have different elements from the original manga, but Ghost in the Shell might be opposite…..
I feel very sorry to one foreign otaku whose image of Motoko was destroyed… well, sometimes unknown is good….

I’ve never read the Bible, but this content seems to be hard.
If what he mentioned above is true….
honestly I don’t understand..
why « sex=evil »?
Actually Japanese anime has some too much fanservice, but this might be evil or insane to people who live in christian countries…?
